Ogun State Government Issues Strong Warning To Schools Against Illegal Fees Amid Academic Resumption

As schools in Ogun State usher in a new academic session, the state government has issued a strong warning to school administrators and teachers against the collection of illegal fees from parents and guardians, applicable to both private and public institutions.
During a media briefing in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, emphasized that any school found guilty of such practices would face penalties. He also cautioned against arbitrary modifications to textbooks and uniforms, reiterating that only one school uniform—aside from sportswear—should be permitted.
“Under the Dapo-Abiodun administration, we will not tolerate any exploitation of parents by school heads and teachers in the form of indiscriminate fees and textbook changes,” Arigbabu stated. He urged school staff, especially those in government-run primary and secondary schools, to uphold punctuality and instill discipline, encouraging them to model behaviors for students to emulate.
The commissioner also directed principals of prominent secondary schools not to exceed 60 students per classroom to foster an effective teaching and learning environment. He called for collaboration with School Portal Administrators to enhance school management and adapt to modern technological advancements.
“Embrace the changes and ensure you are prepared by upgrading your skills. Maintain vigilance, be firm, and develop a keen sense of intuition in your interactions with teachers,” he advised.
Arigbabu highlighted the improved approaches to student discipline among teachers, urging them to become role models through exemplary behavior.
In addition, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, DIG Olusola Subair (Rtd), alongside various security agencies, educated school heads on proactive measures to secure their institutions, underscoring the importance of thorough patrols and quick responses to emergencies.
The Chairman of the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Apostle Abiodun Sanyaolu, and Evang. Olalekan Ifede, head of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), reaffirmed the vital role of teachers as life moulders, advocating for passion, commitment, and regard for their welfare.
The Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, highlighted the purpose of the Stakeholders’ Engagement, encouraging principals and headteachers to pay close attention to the commissioner’s directives.
In closing, Mr. Adeyinka Adekoya, State President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, and Mrs. Folake Onabajo, Chairperson of the Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) in Ogun State, expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun for appointing a dedicated individual to lead the educational sector towards a promising future, pledging their support for government initiatives.
