Ondo Government Launches Investigation Into Former Governor Akeredolu’s Death
The Ondo State Government has announced its intention to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who passed away on December 27, 2023, after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.
Kayode Ajulo (SAN), the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, disclosed on Tuesday that a coroner’s inquest would be initiated in response to petitions received from concerned citizens and professional groups, particularly those from Akeredolu’s hometown of Owo. Ajulo noted that the petitions raised significant questions and highlighted alleged inconsistencies surrounding the late governor’s death, prompting the need to invoke the Coroner’s Law of Ondo State. “It is appropriate for citizens to request this action when legitimate concerns are present,” he stated. “As Attorney-General, I am obligated to respond to such inquiries.”
He assured the public that the investigation would adhere strictly to due process, ensuring it remains free from bias or political influence. Ajulo emphasized that any necessary invitations or arrests would follow established legal procedures.
Decisions regarding the inspection of Akeredolu’s remains or summoning individuals will be at the discretion of the Coroner Judge. “This process must be approached with civility and a sense of responsibility, honoring both the legacy of the late governor and the peace of the state,” Ajulo added.
He reaffirmed that under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration, the law would be upheld impartially: “No one is above the law, and no one is beneath its protection.”
