LG Chairman Lanre Ogunsola Suspends Iyaloja Activities In Mowe Market Amid Extortion Allegations
The Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government in Ogun State, Lanre Ogunsola, has announced a six-month suspension of all activities related to the Iyaloja in Mowe Market, following allegations of extortion and the imposition of exorbitant levies on local traders.
In addition to the suspension, Ogunsola has prohibited anyone from assuming Iyaloja responsibilities within the market during this period. This decision came after a dispute between two factions vying for the Iyaloja position, which triggered protests from the Association of Mowe Market Men and Women.
The protest, which took place last Tuesday, saw a large turnout of vendors, residents, and youths calling for intervention from the Ogun State Government.
The suspension was formalized following a meeting at Ogunsola’s office on Wednesday, attended by senior officials from the Nigeria Police Force’s Area Command and Divisions, the Department of State Security Services (DSS), the National Orientation Agency (NOA), community leaders, traditional chiefs, and other local stakeholders.
Chairman Ogunsola emphasized that the local government would not tolerate selfish interests and directed security agencies to monitor compliance with the suspension and take action against any individuals or groups who breach this order.
