In a heartfelt address in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated that Nigeria’s history would not have been complete had he lost the 2023 presidential election. This statement came during the 8th Day Fidau prayers for the late Awujale of Ijebu, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
Tinubu paid tribute to Oba Adetona, highlighting the late monarch’s pivotal role in his political journey and success during the elections. He remarked, “Our history would not have been completed, carefully and richly, if I failed the last election. I was successful because of your support and the blessing of the late Awujale.”
Reflecting on his memories with the late king, Tinubu shared, “I came to him; he blessed me. He told me, ‘You will win that election and you will win one more time. Go ahead.’ Today, he is no more. He is gone.”
The president praised Oba Adetona for his wisdom, steadfastness, and encouragement, particularly regarding the June 12 struggle and the advancement of democracy in Nigeria.

Tinubu also expressed gratitude to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, whom he referred to as “Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun State,” for his contributions before, during, and after the burial of the monarch.
Governor Abiodun, addressing the gathered crowd, urged the people of Ijebuland to remain united and uphold the values of peace and harmony championed by the late Awujale. He called on residents to honor the monarch’s legacy through actions that embody integrity, dignity, and selfless leadership.
In his brief sermon, Chief Imam of Gbagura, Prof. Kamaldeen Bello, reflected on the inevitability of death, reminding the congregation, “We will all taste death, so live as though today is your last.”
The solemn event was attended by numerous dignitaries, including the governors of Kwara, Ondo, and Ekiti States, as well as the deputy governors of Oyo and Lagos States, along with various ministers and other notable figures.
