In a stark assessment of Nigeria’s policy landscape, former President Olusegun Obasanjo described the nation as a “burial ground for policies,” lamenting the disheartening trend of taking “two steps forward and three steps backward” in governance.

Speaking at the 8th Engr Brig Gen (rtd) Michael Agu Annual Distinguished Lecture and Awards at the Olusegun Obasanjo Space Centre in Abuja, Obasanjo emphasized that the country is not lacking in ambitious plans for progress but rather suffers from a failure to implement and execute these policies effectively.

“It is not enough for leaders to simply create policies or make grand statements,” he stated. “We are inundated with policy proposals in Nigeria, yet we have turned into a graveyard for those that go unexecuted.” He stressed that genuine progress requires actionable steps rather than mere aspirations.

Obasanjo lamented, “Regrettably, this is our reality in every facet of national life. As long as we continue on this path, lasting progress will remain elusive. We must focus on the policies we can effectively implement instead of spreading ourselves too thin.”

During the event, he recounted the ambitious plans of his administration, including the launch of Nigeria’s first satellite in collaboration with China and aspirations for a fully indigenous satellite to be built by Nigerians.

The lecture, organized by the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers, explored “Nigeria’s 21 Years in Space (2003-2024): Achievements, Challenges, and Prospects.” At the event, Obasanjo was honored with the title of Grand Commander of Nigerian Space Exploration, reflecting his significant contributions to the country’s aerospace endeavors.

Obasanjo recalled that his administration had sent over 100 Nigerian engineers to China for specialized training when the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) was established. However, he expressed disappointment that progress has stagnated, citing challenges faced by NASRDA, including reports of financial instability affecting staff salaries.

As Nigeria navigates its complex landscape of governance, Obasanjo’s remarks serve as a poignant reminder of the crucial need for effective policy implementation to pave the way for genuine development and progress.
