A 16 year old apprentice simply named Dimeji, was reportedly swept away on Friday by a flood around St Anthony Secondary School, Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode.

Confirming the incident, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity recounted sequence of the tragedy events.

Dimeji who was said to be learning a barbing handiwork around Awokoya, was said to have accidentally slipped into the flooded canal, after escorting his friend who came to visit him, to take a motorcycle, while the friend sat on the bike and went away, Dimeji on his return erroneously put his leg in the water thinking he was stepping on the wood plank that was normally used to cross over, and that was how he was swept away by the flood.

Information gathered had it that the deceased had recently celebrated his passing out from secondary education at the Ansar-u-Deen Secondary School, in Ijebu Ode, area of Ogun State.

A viral video accompanied by a condolence message on Saturday showed how the corpse of the young boy was retrieved from the gully.

The message reads: “With a heavy heart, we share the sorrowful news of a young life lost to the devastating erosion in Ijebu Ode this evening.

“Yes, what you saw in the video is true, the boy, Dimeji actually slipped into the canal”, the source who pleaded anonymity said.

“The victim, Dimeji, has been confirmed not a student but a barber apprentice at Awokoya. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, including his mother, who sells “fufu” at the same location.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find happiness in this difficult time.”
