The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fuad Kayode Laguda has coasted home to a landslide victory in today’s, Saturday’s, February 3rd, 2024, by-election in Surulere Federal Constituency, Lagos State, Nigeria. This was officially announced and declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Declaring the results, the INEC Returning Officer for the bye-election, Prof Simeon Adebayo, revealed that the APC candidate scored a total number of 11, 203 votes.

Laguda, Gbajabiamila’s chosen ‘successor’ was the Party Chairman of the APC for Surulere Local Government Area, until his interest for the vacant position. He had twice contested the Lagos State House of Assembly seat but was pressured to step down for Desmond Elliot.

He completed his Master’s in Public Administration (Public Policy) from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and also holds an MBA degree from the University of Lagos Business School.

He will be replacing Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who was the Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2019 and 2023 and had won his re-election into the House for the sixth consecutive term to represent the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency during the February 25 National Assembly election before his appointment as Chief of Staff to the President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, mid-2023.

In an official statement as announced by INEC, results showed that Laguda won massively in the six wards that made up the Surulere Federal Constituency, defeating core challengers, Adeola Adebanjo (Labour Party) and Jerry Afemighie (Peoples Democratic Party).
