A daring overnight raid by Nigerian security operatives on the Sagamu residence of Sosanwo Oluwaseun Nojeem, a top aide to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has ignited international condemnation and fueled concerns over Nigeria’s commitment to human rights.
The yesterday’s July 20 2021 operation, reportedly carried out by Nigeria’s Department of State Security (DSS), resulted in the arrest of Sosanwo’s wife and three children, sparking widespread outrage and calls for their immediate release.
“This brazen act of intimidation is a stark reminder of Nigeria’s deteriorating human right record,” said International Human Rights Protection Service (IHRPS) director. “The authorities must release Sosanwo’s family members and cease harassment of IPOB supporters.”
Eyewitnesses described the raid as a “terrifying ordeal” that has left the family traumatized.
“They arrived around 2 am, banging on doors and shouting,” a family member recounted. “We were ordered to lie face-down while they ransacked our home.”
The Nigerian government’s actions have drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, civil society organizations, and IPOB supporters.
“This is a gross abuse of power and an affront to democracy,” declared a spokesperson for the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
As tensions escalate, the international community is urging Nigeria to respect human rights and engage in dialogue with IPOB.
“The Nigerian government must prioritize de-escalation and protect the rights of all citizens,” said a United Nations spokesperson.
Kanu’s rearrest on June 19 has sparked global controversy, with questions surrounding the legality of his extradition from Kenya.
An action which has made prominent human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore released statements, Twitter has been bombarded with hashtags calling for Nnamdi Kanu, aides and other oppressed to be released.
“The Nigerian government’s actions undermine regional stability and perpetuate human rights abuses,” warned a senior official from the African Union.
The IPOB leader faces treason, terrorism, and other charges, sparking concerns over Nigeria’s commitment to justice and fair trial.
