NLC Declares Indefinite Strike In Ogun Over Pension And Wage Issues

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ogun State has initiated an indefinite strike in response to the government’s failure to address critical issues, including the non-remittance of pension deductions and the implementation of the national minimum wage.

The strike was announced on Monday by Mr. Demola Hameed-Benco, the Ogun State Chairman of the NLC, following a resolution made at a statewide congress of civil service workers in Abeokuta, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

All civil and public servants have been directed to immediately withdraw their services, citing the government’s alleged violations of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), established under the Ogun State Pension Reform Law of 2008 and amended in 2013.

“Organised Labour in Ogun has declared an indefinite strike due to the government’s non-remittance of pension deductions and the failure to implement the minimum wage, among other issues,” Hameed-Benco stated. “This decision was reached during the congress held by state civil service workers and the organised labour.”

The statement emphasized the seriousness of the situation, warning members that disobedience to the directive would be at their own risk, with the union refusing to accept responsibility for any repercussions.

The NLC urged the government to engage in dialogue promptly, emphasizing that the strike will continue until all demands are addressed. The union reiterated its commitment to solidarity and promised to keep workers updated on any further developments.

In reaction, the NLC has vowed to intensify its campaign for the full enforcement of wage policies, cautioning that both state governments and private sector employers who neglect to implement the new wage will face organized resistance.
