Nigeria @ 65: Federal Government Cancels Parade, As Other Programs Remain Intact

With just a few days to go until Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, the federal government has announced the cancellation of the much-anticipated parade. The parade, which was scheduled to take place on October 1, was set to commemorate the country’s freedom from colonial rule in 1960. However, Segun Imohiosen, director of information and public relations in the office of the secretary of the federation, made the announcement in a statement released on Monday.
The federal government expressed their regret for any inconvenience caused by the cancellation, but assured citizens that this decision does not diminish the significance of the milestone anniversary. In fact, the government remains fully committed to celebrating this momentous occasion with dignity and enthusiasm.
In the statement, Imohiosen stated, “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”
While the parade may have been cancelled, all other programs scheduled for the Independence Anniversary will still take place. This includes the highly anticipated presidential broadcast, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, will address the nation and outline the government’s plans for the future.
The federal government also expressed their appreciation for the understanding, support, and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests. They also urged citizens to continue supporting the reforms of President Tinubu in making Nigeria a greater nation.
Earlier, the federal government had declared Wednesday, October 1, as a public holiday for the independence day celebration. With this new development, citizens can still take the day off to celebrate and reflect on the progress the country has made over the past 65 years.
As we approach this significant milestone, let us join together in celebrating Nigeria’s independence with pride, unity, and optimism. While the parade may have been cancelled, our spirit of patriotism remains unwavering. Let us continue to work towards building a greater nation, just as our founding fathers did 65 years ago.
