ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike Following Productive Negotiations With Government

In a significant development, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike that began just 10 days prior. The decision was revealed by ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, during a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, where he directed union members to return to work starting Thursday.
Piwuna indicated that the suspension comes after “fruitful engagements” during negotiations with government representatives last week. This resolution was reached following an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) conducted in Abuja from October 21 to 22.
Despite the suspension, Piwuna cautioned that the union stands ready to resume the strike should the government fail to fulfill its commitments within one month. He stated, “NEC resolved to grant the government a one-month window to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement and address all other outstanding issues.”
Piwuna underscored ASUU’s expectation that the government will seize this opportunity to foster lasting industrial harmony and stability within the university system.
