‎DSS Summons Activist Sowore Over False Social Media Post Against President Tinubu

On September 7, 2025, the Department of State Services (DSS) sent a letter to activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, requesting his appearance for a critical matter. The agency accused Sowore of making a “false and malicious” social media post targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. ‎The letter, signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the Director-General of the Service, stated that Sowore had referred to President Tinubu as a “criminal” in an August 26, 2025 post on X (formerly Twitter). The Service added that the post, which allegedly mocked Tinubu’s declaration on corruption in Brazil, was “repugnant, derogatory, and capable of inciting public disturbance.”

‎As a result, the DSS has demanded that Sowore publicly retract his comments on the same platform, publish apologies in at least two national dailies, and two television stations, and send a representation to their headquarters in Abuja or via email within one week. Moreover, the agency has also notified the United States Embassy in Abuja about the summons.

‎The DSS further emphasized that Sowore’s derogatory remarks towards the President could not only damage his reputation among Nigerians but also incite disunity, insurrection, and even a breakdown of law and order.
