Empowerment For Change: Aisha Yesufu Calls For Women’s Leadership In Nigeria, Says Nigeria

Human rights activist and co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, boldly declared that Nigeria’s leadership has failed under male presidents and that it is time for women to take the helm.
Speaking at the Girls Summit in Umuahia, Abia State, Yesufu stated, “Male presidents have failed us!” She passionately called for an end to the marginalization of women in political positions, particularly in the presidency.
Challenging existing stereotypes and cultural barriers, Yesufu emphasized that it is unjust for female aspirants to face ridicule while men—even those lacking competency—are readily accepted as leaders. “No matter how bad a man is, nobody says he can’t be president, but the moment a woman runs, she is told a woman can’t be president,” she articulated, urging society to dismantle the discriminatory practices that hinder women’s advancement.
In her speech, Yesufu also highlighted the need for stronger protections for widows and advocated for the abolition of harmful cultural practices against them. Her passionate address resonated with the audience, eliciting loud applause from participants who shared her vision for equality and inclusion.
Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, the wife of the Abia State Governor, acknowledged this important cause through her representative, Mrs. Adaeze Emetu, the wife of the Deputy Governor. She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of girls, widows, and other vulnerable groups.
Norah Okafor, founder of the Protect the Precious Foundation and convener of the summit, encouraged young girls to be vocal whenever they experience abuse or threats, pledging that her foundation will support their safety and dignity.
In a previous development, Yesufu had criticized the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in July for allegedly excluding youths and women from its leadership structure. She expressed her disappointment, asserting that political parties must genuinely practice inclusion and equal opportunities in their operations.
