Kwankwaso Decries Political Defections As Betrayal Of Mass Support
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and the presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has strongly condemned politicians who switch to rival parties after gaining the trust and support of the masses, labeling such actions as the “greatest political sin.”
Kwankwaso made these remarks in Kano while welcoming numerous defectors from Takai Local Government Area into the NNPP at his residence on Miller Road. This follows the recent departures of key figures, including Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, who transitioned from NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reflecting on the history of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Kwankwaso recalled the challenges faced, particularly during 2015 when some joined the movement with dishonest intentions, attempting to sow discord. “Thankfully, the movement remained steadfast,” he stated.
Recalling past elections, he noted that each has provided valuable lessons. “The 2019 elections and the most recent one have taught us much about resilience and commitment,” he said.

Kwankwaso emphasized that the Kwankwasiyya movement is fundamentally people-centered, rejecting financial inducements. He criticized the practice of vote-buying, asserting, “In Kano, the poor stood firm against those who sold their votes. If it relied on them, the NNPP wouldn’t have won.”
He condemned politicians who, after winning elections on the backs of public support, betray their constituents by joining opposition parties. “This is the highest form of betrayal in democracy. There is no greater political sin than turning against those who believed in you,” he asserted.
Kwankwaso warned aspiring leaders against underestimating the Kwankwasiyya movement, stating, “Fighting this movement is a grave mistake. Those who engage in that battle will soon realize how formidable it is.”
He reaffirmed the unity and mission of the movement to uplift everyday citizens. “Whether or not you hold an appointment or contract, our collective goal is to serve the people and ensure their voices are heard,” he declared.
In closing, Kwankwaso congratulated the new members joining the NNPP. He expressed optimism that the movement would continue to flourish and benefit all Nigerians, urging them to rally more support within their communities. “This is a movement to be proud of, dedicated to the common man,” he concluded.
