‎Federal Government Prohibits DisCos From Charging Consumers For Meter Installation

‎In a significant move to enhance transparency and accessibility in Nigeria’s electricity sector, the federal government has announced a ban on electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and meter installers from charging consumers for the installation of electricity meters. Officials warned that any entity found violating this order will face legal repercussions.

‎The announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during his inspection of a new shipment of smart meters at APM Terminals in Apapa, Lagos. These meters have been procured as part of the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), aimed at addressing the country’s metering deficiencies and improving the integrity of electricity billing.

‎Adelabu emphasized that under this initiative, all meters supplied must be installed at no cost to customers across all categories. He further clarified that demanding payment for meter installation constitutes a criminal offense for any staff member of DisCos or meter installers.

‎This directive marks a crucial step towards ensuring fair access to electricity services for all Nigerians.
