Mowe Market Traders Protest Against Imposition Of New Iyaloja, Urge Ogun State Government To Listen To Their Concerns
On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, traders from Mowe Market, area of Ogun State, gathered in a powerful show of solidarity against the imposition of Mrs. Nofisat Makinde as the new Iyaloja. The protest held at the Mowe market from the market junction spread across the market, saw a mass turnout of youths, men, and women, all expressing their discontent and demanding that the Ogun State Government, led by the amiable Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, reconsider this controversial decision.
The protesters contend that the appointment of Mrs. Nofisat Makinde lacks the backing of all elders, leaders, stakeholders and traders in the market, and as well as the local community, would disrupt the economic growth of the market, and undermine the traditional values that govern the position of Iyaloja. They appeals to Governor Abiodun, whom they regard as a father figure and a capable leader, to acknowledge their grievances and uphold the principles of “Omoluabi” that he embodies.
In a collective voice, the traders emphasized the importance of community involvement in leadership decisions that affect their livelihoods and expressed their hope for a solution that prioritizes the will of the people.
While speaking to news men from Genesis Media Hub during the solidarity protest, Mr. Wasiu Olatoye said; “today, we stand united as the heartbeat of Mowe Market. We cannot accept the imposition of a leader who does not understand our struggles or our culture. We call on Governor Abiodun, a leader who embodies integrity and compassion, to listen to our voices. Let us work together for a leadership that fosters growth and respects our rights.”
Alhaji Amiru in his speech said Mrs. Nofisat Makinde may be qualified in some sense, but her appointment certainly lacks the local support necessary to lead us effectively. Our market women and men know what they need for the growth of their businesses. We appeal to His Excellency to reconsider this decision—our economic future depends on it.”
“We are deeply concerned about the impact this decision will have on our market. The position of Iyaloja is not just about authority; it’s about understanding and connection with the community. We urge Governor Abiodun to uphold our traditions and turn his attention toward the people’s needs”, Mr. Moruf said.
Mrs. Peace Omole, who represent the Igbo traders said as a trader in this market, I can confidently say we need a leader who understands the intricacies of our daily struggles. Mrs. Nofisat Makinde lack of local knowledge poses a threat to our livelihood. We respect our Governor and hope he will take a stand with us for a just and fair resolution.
“This protest is not just against Mrs. Nofisat Makinde’s appointment; it’s about ensuring that our voices are heard. We trust that Governor Abiodun will honor his commitment to his people by listening to our concerns and taking appropriate action”, Mrs. Peace Anita added.
In his remarks, Comrade Tunde Ogundipe noted that; “We are not against anyone having the right to lead, but we demand a choice that reflects the will of the people of Mowe Market. If our voices are silenced, our economic growth will surely suffer. We appeal to our Governor—please engage with us and consider the very real consequences of ignoring the community’s wishes.”
The collective sentiment during the protest was clear—the traders of Mowe Market desire to participate in choosing their leaders, urging the government and every other authority involved to recognize the potential repercussions of imposing leadership without their consent. They remain hopeful for a favorable response from the State Government regarding their concerns.
