Peter Obi Vows To Free Nnamdi Kanu, Engage Agitators And Negotiate Peace If Elected President In 2027

Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to securing the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, should he emerge victorious in the next presidential election.
Obi also pledged to pursue dialogue with agitators, armed groups, and other stakeholders across the country as part of a comprehensive strategy to address Nigeria’s lingering security and political challenges.
Speaking during an engagement in Washington, the former governor maintained that Kanu should not remain in detention over statements allegedly made during radio broadcasts. He emphasized that constructive engagement and dialogue remain more effective tools for resolving disputes than prolonged detention and confrontation.
According to Obi, leadership requires openness to communication, even with individuals or groups holding opposing views.
“I have said this repeatedly; there is no reason for detaining Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. You cannot arrest somebody simply because of comments made on radio. As a politician, people have called me different names, yet I understand that dialogue is essential. If I am in government today, I will engage and discuss with all agitators,” Obi stated.
The presidential hopeful further disclosed that his administration would be prepared to initiate conversations with bandits and other armed groups as part of broader efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability across the country.
Reaffirming his position on Kanu’s detention, Obi said:
“I will free Nnamdi Kanu as president because I believe he has done nothing wrong. I will also negotiate with bandits as part of efforts to achieve lasting peace.”
Obi stressed that engaging individuals or groups with grievances should not be misconstrued as endorsing their actions. Rather, he argued that dialogue often serves as the first step toward de-escalating tensions, addressing underlying concerns, and creating pathways for peaceful resolutions.
He added that while communication and negotiation should be prioritized, government retains the responsibility to apply stronger measures where necessary to maintain law, order, and national security.
The former governor’s remarks have once again sparked discussions on the role of dialogue, reconciliation, and political engagement in tackling Nigeria’s complex security challenges, particularly in regions affected by insurgency, separatist agitations, and criminal activities.
As the 2027 presidential race gradually gathers momentum, Obi’s position underscores his belief that sustainable peace can be achieved through inclusive engagement, justice, and responsive leadership.
