An Ogun State Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the 46-year-old driver involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of Nigerian-born boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
The adjournment was announced on Tuesday following an application by the prosecution, represented by Richard Nigiwe, who informed the court that although four witnesses were listed, only three were present in court. He explained that the prosecution required additional time to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
Counsel to the defendant, Olalekan Abiodun, opposed the request, arguing that the prosecution had sufficient time before the hearing date to complete the necessary documentation. However, the presiding magistrate ruled that, in the interest of justice, the matter should be adjourned and directed the prosecution to immediately duplicate and submit the case file to the Attorney General’s office.
The court consequently fixed February 25, 2026, for the continuation of trial.
Speaking after the proceedings, defence counsel Abiodun said he accepted the court’s ruling, while the prosecuting counsel declined to make any comment.
The case arises from a tragic accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. A Lexus SUV driven by Kayode reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Anthony Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Kayode was subsequently charged with four offences, including dangerous and negligent driving, as well as driving without a valid licence. He was remanded in custody on January 2, 2026, and later granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties. The Ogun State Police Command, however, disclosed that he remained in custody pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
The court had earlier fixed January 20, 2026, for the commencement of trial before the latest adjournment.
Meanwhile, funeral prayers for the deceased victims were held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque. Prior to the repatriation of their remains, Anthony Joshua and his mother had visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their last respects.
The adjournment, according to the court, is to enable the prosecution to complete all required legal processes ahead of the next hearing scheduled for February 25, 2026.
