‎Tensions Erupt In Senate As Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Clashes With President Akpabio Over Abortion Debate

‎In an unexpected turn of events during the Nigerian Senate’s plenary session on Tuesday, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan confronted Senate President Godswill Akpabio after her request to address the contentious abortion issue was denied.

‎Visibly frustrated, Senator Natasha asserted, “Mr. Senate President, please may I speak. I’m a woman, and abortion is a critical issue for women; it’s very important, sir.” Her appeal highlighted the significance of the topic at hand.

‎President Akpabio responded by stating that the matter had been set aside but allowed for a brief comment if it was essential. “This has been stepped down entirely, distinguished senator, but if you have anything specific to add, you may proceed,” Akpabio remarked.

‎However, the situation escalated when Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State and current senator, intervened, emphasizing the need to adhere to parliamentary procedure. “Mr. President, we’ve been repeatedly reminded that once a matter is concluded and you have dropped the gavel, allowing an exception for distinguished Senator Natasha means you must extend the same courtesy to all, rendering our rules ineffective. The rules must be respected. We have declared no further discussion, and she should comply,” Oshiomhole asserted.

‎In his definitive ruling, Akpabio clarified that he was unaware of the nature of Natasha’s intended remarks. “I am not clairvoyant to know what the senator wants to say. Had I known, I would have directed her to Rule 52, Subsection 6. Given that the Senate has reached a conclusion, any further comments would be out of order,” he stated firmly, ultimately ruling Senator Natasha out of order and bringing the exchange to a close.
