Nigeria’s entertainment, academic, and cultural communities have been thrown into mourning following the passing of renowned Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker, scholar, and former Head of the Department of Theatre and Media Arts at Ekiti State University (EKSU), Dr. Kola Oyewo.
The veteran thespian reportedly passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 80. His son, Dr. Wale Oyewo, confirmed the sad development, disclosing that the respected actor died peacefully just hours before the announcement.
Dr. Oyewo’s death marks the end of an extraordinary career that spanned more than six decades and profoundly influenced Nigerian theatre, film, and arts education. Widely celebrated as one of the foremost custodians of Yoruba cultural heritage, he dedicated his life to the advancement of performing arts both on stage and in academia.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Kola Oyewo began his artistic journey in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. His remarkable talent and dedication quickly earned him recognition as one of the most respected figures in Nigerian theatre.
He gained widespread acclaim for his unforgettable portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance that cemented his reputation as a leading figure in African theatre and dramatic arts.
Beyond the stage, Dr. Oyewo became a familiar face in numerous acclaimed film and television productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and several Yoruba-language movies that contributed significantly to the growth and development of Nollywood.
In addition to his achievements in entertainment, he distinguished himself as an accomplished academic. He earned a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at several prestigious institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, Elizade University, and Ekiti State University. Through his mentorship, scholarship, and teaching, he inspired and nurtured generations of actors, playwrights, filmmakers, and theatre scholars.
Only a few months ago, Dr. Oyewo celebrated his 80th birthday and received glowing tributes from across the country, including recognition from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described him as a national treasure and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling.
