Lagos Government Warns Schools Against Compelling Parents To Buy Books And Uniforms Directly

The Lagos State Government has warned schools against unnecessarily compelling parents and guardians to purchase approved textbooks, uniforms, stationery and other school materials directly from them, particularly where similar approved items are available from other suppliers at more affordable prices.

The warning was issued through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) as schools across the state prepare for resumption.

According to the government, parents and guardians should be aware of their consumer rights and should not be subjected to unfair practices that unnecessarily limit their freedom to purchase approved educational materials from alternative suppliers.

LASCOPA noted that parents are often provided with lists of approved books, uniforms and stationery after completing their children’s admission process. However, the agency stressed that where equivalent approved items are reasonably available elsewhere, schools should not force parents to purchase such materials exclusively from the school.

The government explained that the directive is aimed at protecting consumers, promoting fairness and ensuring that parents and guardians are not subjected to unnecessary financial pressure, especially when identical or equivalent approved materials can be obtained at lower prices from other vendors.

Parents and guardians who encounter practices they believe violate their consumer rights have also been encouraged to report such cases to the appropriate authorities.

As preparations continue for the reopening of schools across Lagos State, the government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that educational institutions operate in a manner that is fair and considerate to parents and guardians.
