‘I Want To Enjoy Nigeria At Old Age’ — Remi Tinubu Seeks Support For Husband’s Re-election
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to voters in the South-East to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in the 2027 presidential election, while calling for continued cooperation in advancing the country’s development.
She made the appeal on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, in Owerri, Imo State, during a visit focused on empowering women across the state.
Addressing beneficiaries and residents during the programme, the First Lady said, “Make una vote for Mr President, we go work for una and Nigeria go better. I want to enjoy Nigeria at old age, so I will work for Nigeria, for my old age.”
The empowerment initiative, implemented through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is designed to support 18,500 women across Nigeria with equipment to strengthen their livelihoods and small businesses.
According to the First Lady, 500 women from each of the five South-East states would benefit from the programme, receiving items such as generators, industrial grinding machines, gas cylinders and ovens.
She further disclosed that Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, had complemented the federal initiative by providing additional empowerment items for 2,000 women in the state. This increased the number of beneficiaries in Imo to 2,500.
In recognition of the governor’s support, Senator Tinubu announced an additional cash assistance of N100,000 for each beneficiary under the empowerment programme.
Beyond the empowerment activities, the First Lady’s visit also featured a significant cultural honour as she was conferred with the chieftaincy title of Oso Di Eme 1 of Imo State.
The title, which translates to “She who supports her husband,” was reportedly conferred on her during her visit to the state on Wednesday.
The conferment was announced by the First Lady’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Bukola Kukoyi, who shared photographs from the ceremony on her X handle.
Kukoyi explained that the honour recognised Senator Tinubu’s role, alongside her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in contributing to the administration and development of the country.
Describing the First Lady as a worthy partner to the President, Kukoyi wrote: “Oso Di Eme 1 of Imo State meaning ‘She who supports her husband.’ A worthy partner of her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. As he’s working, she is working!!!!”
The Imo State honour adds to a growing list of traditional recognitions received by the First Lady for her advocacy and interventions, particularly in the areas of women’s empowerment and social development.
In June 2026, Senator Tinubu was also conferred with the chieftaincy title of Ugosimba I of Enugu. The Igbo title, meaning “Jewel of Empowerment,” was presented in recognition of her efforts towards empowering women and promoting social development across Nigeria.
Her latest visit to Imo therefore combined political engagement, economic empowerment and cultural recognition, further highlighting the First Lady’s growing activities across the South-East as the country gradually moves towards the 2027 general elections.
