Meet Grace Atinuke Oyelude: The First Miss Nigeria Who Continues To Inspire At 86 Years Old

In a time when beauty pageants were still a relatively new concept in Nigeria, Grace Atinuke Oyelude broke barriers and made history as the first ever Miss Nigeria in 1957. Her story not only captures the hearts of many but also stands as a testament to the power of determination and hard work.
Grace’s journey to becoming Miss Nigeria was not a conventional one. It was her brother who secretly submitted her photo to the Daily Times contest, without her knowledge. At that time, she was working at UAC in Kano, and winning the crown was the last thing on her mind. But as fate would have it, her traditional attire and undeniable grace and beauty caught the attention of the judges at the finals in Lagos, earning her the title and a prize of £200.
With the prize money, Grace pursued her dreams of becoming a nurse by studying in the UK. She became a registered nurse in 1961 and a midwife a year later, further cementing her position as a trailblazer in a male-dominated profession. But she didn’t stop there. Grace continued to expand her knowledge and qualifications in nursing and hospital administration.
Upon her return to Nigeria, Grace worked at Kaduna General Hospital and during the Nigerian Civil War, she served as the leader of medical teams, showcasing her dedication to helping those in need. Her exceptional work ethic and leadership skills did not go unnoticed, and she eventually became the senior matron at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.
But Grace’s contributions to the healthcare sector did not stop there. She also played a crucial role in shaping health policy by serving as an external examiner and chairing the Kwara State Health Management Board. Her remarkable efforts in the field of nursing and healthcare earned her the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award, as well as several chieftaincy titles.
