ASUU Launches Two-Week Warning Strike Nationwide To Press For Government Action On Agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially initiated a two-week warning strike across Nigeria, effective immediately following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
In a press briefing held in Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced that the strike commenced at midnight on October 13, 2025. He emphasized that the industrial action aims to compel the government to fulfill its outstanding agreements and address the persistent issues facing public universities in the country.
On September 28, 2025, ASUU had issued the ultimatum as part of its renewed efforts to resolve long-standing challenges within Nigeria’s university system. The union stated that the decision to strike became necessary after numerous attempts to engage with the government yielded no significant progress.
Professor Piwuna urged all ASUU branches across the nation to cease their activities starting at 12:01 AM on October 13, 2025. He declared, “The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive, as agreed upon at the last NEC meeting.”
The union’s leadership hopes that this warning strike will prompt the government to take immediate action towards fulfilling its commitments and improving the conditions of public universities in Nigeria.
