Defence Headquarters Denies Coup Rumors, Clarifies Independence Anniversary Cancellation

In a resolute stance against misinformation, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has categorically refuted claims suggesting that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day anniversary activities was due to an alleged coup plot. The statement, issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, described the assertions as not only false but also misleading, urging citizens to dismiss such speculations as the work of “purveyors of misinformation and enemies of the nation.”
The DHQ provided clarity on the decision to cancel the Independence Day parade, emphasizing that it was an administrative choice linked to President Bola Tinubu’s participation in a vital strategic bilateral engagement abroad. This decision was made to ensure that the President could focus on international diplomacy while the military prioritized ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry within the country.
“The claims by the said publication are entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace,” the statement asserted. This comment is aimed at addressing growing concerns about the credibility of information circulating in the media landscape, especially in light of the country’s recent security challenges.
Furthermore, the DHQ responded to references in the report regarding the recent arrest of sixteen military officers. The statement clarified that these arrests were part of internal disciplinary procedures unrelated to any coup activities. It framed the ongoing investigation into these officers as a routine process focused on maintaining discipline and professionalism within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“The ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal process aimed at maintaining discipline and professionalism within the Armed Forces,” the DHQ further noted, dispelling any notions of malign intent behind the disciplinary actions.
Reaffirming their commitment to democracy, the DHQ emphasized the Armed Forces’ loyalty to the Constitution and the Federal Government, under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They called on the public to remain vigilant against attempts to incite fear or mistrust through the spread of misleading information.
“Democracy is forever,” the statement concluded, reinforcing the military’s dedication to upholding the democratic processes in Nigeria while fostering confidence within the citizenry.
As Nigeria approaches its Independence Day, the DHQ encourages national unity and vigilance, urging citizens to support the military’s ongoing efforts to secure peace and stability in the nation.
