National Youth Council Of Nigeria, Sagamu Branch, Leads Environmental Sanitation Exercise At Awolowo Market

In a commendable display of civic responsibility, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Sagamu Branch, under the dynamic leadership of Comrade Yusuf Adebayo, organized an impactful environmental sanitation exercise today. The event took place today, September 18, 2025, at the bustling Awolowo Market, a vital hub of commerce in Sagamu, underscoring the council’s commitment to fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
The sanitation exercise commenced early in the morning, with participants gathering at the market to mobilize and set the day’s agenda. Comrade Adebayo emphasized the importance of community-driven initiatives in tackling environmental challenges, stating, “Our environment reflects our collective responsibility. By engaging in this exercise, we are not only cleaning our market but also promoting awareness on the significance of maintaining a tidy and sustainable environment.”
Volunteers, comprising youth council members and residents of Sagamu, demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and dedication. Armed with brooms, shovels, and trash bags, they cleaned up debris, cleared stagnant water, and sorted waste for recycling. The participants took advantage of this opportunity to educate market vendors and shoppers about the importance of regular waste disposal and environmental sustainability.
The NYCN’s initiative is part of a broader campaign aimed at encouraging environmental stewardship among Nigerian youths. During the exercise, several banners and informational leaflets were distributed, highlighting practical steps the community can take to maintain a cleaner environment. The council also urged local authorities to increase inspections and provide more waste disposal bins in public areas.
Local vendors expressed appreciation for the NYCN’s efforts, noting the improved look of the market space. “This exercise is a great initiative,” said Mrs. Adeola, a fruit seller at the market. “Not only is it making our environment cleaner, but it also inspires us to keep it that way.”
As the event concluded, Comrade Adebayo reiterated his call to action, stating, “This is just the beginning. We must continue to work together, not just one day a year, but every day to ensure that our community remains clean and vibrant. Let this exercise inspire others to take similar initiatives.”
The NYCN Sagamu Branch plans to hold more sanitation exercises and engage in other community development projects in the coming months, reinforcing their commitment to fostering a vibrant, healthy, and environmentally conscious Sagamu.
