NGIJ Sets September 30 For Leadership Election As Owodunni-Led Committee Releases Timetable
The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) has commenced preparations for its 2026 leadership election, with the Electoral Committee, chaired by Readership NG publisher, Lateef Owodunni, releasing the official timetable for the exercise.
The election is expected to provide members of the guild with an opportunity to choose a new leadership and determine the direction, priorities and professional agenda of the organisation in the coming years.
The nomination process has now been concluded, following the closure of the sale of nomination forms on Thursday, September 10, 2026. With that stage completed, attention has shifted to the campaign phase and other activities leading to the election.
Under the timetable released by the Electoral Committee, campaigns are scheduled to run from Friday, September 11, through September 25. Candidates are expected to present their manifestos to members on September 27, while accreditation of eligible voters is slated for September 28.

The election itself is scheduled to hold on September 30, when accredited members will vote to determine those who will lead the guild during the next phase of its development.
The Electoral Committee is headed by Lateef Owodunni as Chairman, while Obadimu Abiodun Adeyemi, popularly known as Veron and publisher of NewsExtra, serves as Secretary. Akinwale Kasali, publisher of Ramira News, is also a member of the committee.
The committee has the responsibility of coordinating and supervising the electoral process, with the expectation that each stage will be conducted transparently and in line with the approved timetable.
As campaigns get underway, focus is expected to shift to the various candidates, their manifestos, policy priorities and plans for strengthening the guild and advancing the interests of investigative journalists.
The election comes at a significant period for journalism in Nigeria, where credible investigative reporting continues to play an important role in promoting accountability, transparency and issues of public interest.
The outcome of the September 30 election is therefore expected to have implications for the future direction of the NGIJ, particularly as members seek leadership capable of strengthening professional standards, promoting responsible investigative journalism and increasing the guild’s contribution to public-interest reporting.
