Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Claims ₦14M Monthly Salary Insufficient For Overhead Costs
Former Governor of Abia State and current senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, revealed in a recent interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today that his monthly earnings of 14 million Naira are inadequate to manage his overhead expenses and other costs associated with his role.
Representing the Abia North Senatorial District, Kalu expressed his commitment to serving his constituents while highlighting the financial challenges faced by legislators. “I earn N14 million per month, which includes my salary and that of my staff, but let me be honest; it’s not enough. I have to cover travel expenses to my constituency, including buying fuel,” he stated.
Kalu emphasized his determination to fulfill his duties and contribute positively to his community. “I will never fail in my responsibility to Abia North, and I believe most senators are committed to serving their constituents as well,” he added.

Reflecting on his experience as governor, Kalu advocated for a reform in the electoral system, suggesting a single six-year term for elected officials. “When I was a governor, I opted for a six-year term to alleviate the financial burden of re-elections. The focus tends to shift towards re-election rather than addressing the needs of the people,” he explained.
Kalu believes that a shift to a longer term would enhance governance, allowing leaders to focus more on their responsibilities rather than electoral campaigns.
