APC Faces Fresh Turmoil In Remo North As Former Chairman John Obafemi Resigns, Barely Few Weeks After Ijaduoye
The 2027 political race in Remo North State Constituency has entered a fresh phase of uncertainty following the resignation of former Remo North Local Government Chairman and former Ogun State House of Assembly member, John Obafemi, from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obafemi announced his resignation from the APC with immediate effect in a letter dated September 7, 2026, citing what he described as prolonged non-recognition of his leadership within the party at both the local government and state levels.
The development has attracted attention within political circles in Remo North, particularly as it coincides with the commencement of public campaigns and flag-off activities for the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, in line with the electoral timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In his resignation letter addressed to the APC State Chairman through the party’s Ward 2 Chairman in Remo North, Obafemi said his decision followed careful consideration of his political experience and journey within the party.
The former lawmaker, who represented Remo North State Constituency between 2011 and 2015, also reflected on his previous service as chairman of the local government between 2004 and 2010, describing his contribution to the people as one carried out with sincerity and determination.
He said his resignation had become necessary as he reconsidered his political aspirations and career, particularly in relation to how he could continue contributing to the socio-economic development of Remo North, Ogun State and Nigeria.

Reacting to the development, the APC leadership in Remo North described Obafemi’s resignation as a welcome development, while rejecting his claim that he had been denied recognition within the party.
In a statement signed by the party’s LGA Secretary, Omo’ba Yinka Soyemi, the party leadership alleged that Obafemi’s political activities and relationships with individuals perceived to have opposition interests had raised questions about his commitment to the APC.
The party maintained that recognition within its structure was based on loyalty, active participation and respect for established party structures, adding that Obafemi was not forced to leave the party.
The APC leadership also made allegations concerning aspects of Obafemi’s previous administration and political activities, while defending Governor Dapo Abiodun against what it described as the former council chairman’s negative disposition towards the governor.
The resignation is expected to generate discussion around the 2027 ambition of Adebiyi Adeleye, the APC candidate for the Remo North State Constituency seat.
Adeleye contested the same constituency in the last general election, where the APC was unable to secure victory in any of the 10 wards that make up the constituency.
With the party already facing the challenge of improving its electoral performance in the area, the departure of a former local government chairman and former state legislator could add another layer to the political calculations ahead of 2027, particularly if Obafemi succeeds in retaining or mobilising significant grassroots support outside the APC.
However, the extent to which the development will affect the APC’s electoral prospects remains uncertain and will depend largely on subsequent political alignments, grassroots mobilisation and the ability of the party to maintain cohesion within its ranks.
Obafemi’s resignation also comes shortly after another development within the Remo North APC. Genesis Media Hub had earlier reported that Amb. Chief Olasunkanmi Ijaduoye, described as a loyal stalwart of the APC, resigned from his position as a member of the Media and Publicity Committee of the APC Campaign Council in Remo North Local Government.
Ijaduoye’s resignation letter, dated September 3, 2026, clarified that his decision was limited to his membership of the campaign committee and did not amount to resignation from the APC.
The two developments have nevertheless fuelled discussions among party stakeholders about internal cohesion and the need to strengthen unity within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
A party member who spoke on condition of anonymity urged stakeholders not to celebrate Obafemi’s departure, stressing that the priority should be to resolve internal differences and build a stronger political structure.
According to the source, while the APC may maintain that Obafemi’s exit will have little effect on its structure, his ability to influence grassroots supporters could potentially have electoral implications.
As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, attention will now turn to how Obafemi’s next political steps unfold, how the APC responds to the development, and whether the party can consolidate its structure sufficiently to mount a stronger challenge in Remo North State Constituency.
For Adebiyi Adeleye, whose previous attempt at the Assembly seat ended without an APC victory in any of the constituency’s 10 wards, the unfolding developments add to the political hurdles that will have to be navigated before the 2027 contest.
