Tragic Consequences: Ogun Governor Demands Justice For Student Following Corporal Punishment Incident
In a heartbreaking incident at Obada Grammar School, Idi-Emi, 16-year-old Monday Ajiro, an SS2 student, tragically died following corporal punishment administered by teachers in Ogun State.
The events unfolded on Friday, October 25, 2024, during a morning assembly when the school principal addressed students about a missing waste paper basket, which had been replaced at their expense. During the assembly, a student made a sarcastic remark in response, prompting the principal to leave in anger. Subsequently, teachers demanded the identity of the student who spoke out. When the students refused to cooperate, over 100 students were subjected to punishment, including corporal punishment and “frog jumps,” despite a state-wide ban on such measures since 2020.
Shortly after the punishment, Ajiro began vomiting and was rushed to a local hospital, later transferred a considerable distance to FMC, Abeokuta, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following Ajiro’s death, the Ogun State government swiftly closed the school, arresting the teacher directly involved in the punishment and placing principal Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo on immediate suspension for violating the corporal punishment ban.

On Saturday, a delegation from the Ogun State Ministry of Education visited Ajiro’s family to extend condolences, delivering a letter of sympathy and financial support of N500,000 for the grieving family during this difficult time. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with state officials gathering firsthand accounts to ensure justice is served.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has called for a thorough investigation into the matter, vowing that those responsible will face the full consequences of the law.
